I don’t know why but the moment I saw the title of Kathy Reichs’ book, 206 Bones, I had a strong feeling on what one of the plot points would be. And I was right!

Spoiler 1

I knew that somehow this story was going to involve her recovering a complete skeleton (206 Bones) and then some being misplaced (lost) in a way in which she would again become the center of an investigation.

And while I did see that twist coming, my other pet peeve with her books materialized again, Dr. Brennan was again in mortal danger because of her investigation. Don’t worry – that’s no secret as the book starts with her in danger and then the story is told in flashbacks.

Other than that, the story was unremarkable at best, except maybe for the introduction of her ex-husband’s family which felt a little to unbelievable and stereotypical at best.

I just don’t understand why female authors write female leads that always seem to end up in danger, needing rescue by the strong male counterpart in the series. Why can’t we get a smart, intelligent and capable leading lady who is fully capable of getting out of trouble herself? Or better yet, being smart enough to avoid it? I’m thinking, like Patricia Cornwell’s Kay Scarpetta, this series is going to soon be abandoned.

Anyway, if you haven’t figured it out, I wasn’t a huge fan of this book in the series and if I’m ever faced with the possibility of having to pay to read one of her boks, probably won’t. For now though, as long as they’re free, I’ll stick around.
